French Friday (34)

Hello dear readers!

I know, today is saturday... Bad bad me!
I have trouble keeping the blog updated right now, so much is going on here...

In a past French Friday, I talked about the French translations of the Harry Potter series' words and names. Today, I'm going to do the same with The Lord of the Rings. Some names are the same, but some were a bit changed or litteraly translated. I only chose a few, otherwise the list would take ten pages...!

Frodo : Frodon
Bilbo : Bilbon
-> I have no idea why they added an N at the end. But it must be for a really good reason, knowing that Tolkien used to check all the translations!
Brandybuck : Brandebouc
Baggins : Sacquet
The Shire : La Comté
Rivendell : Fondcombe
Whitwell : Blanche Source
Tuckborough : Bourg-de-Touque
Michel Delving : Grand'Cave
Hobbiton : Hobbitebourg
Bywater : Lézeau

What names do you like best?!PS : If I were a Hobbit, my name would be Alyryan 'Proudfoot' Norcross. What would YOUR name be ? Check it out here, and share it in a comment!

  2. I love all things Tolkien (I even took a class!), and it was interesting to see the differences in the names.

I also love name generators, and I got Elwssa 'the Magnificent' Roper of the Bree.

    Have a great weekend!

  3. Oh I love this! I like Brandebouc the best! It's prettier than Brandybuck.

    My Hobbit name would be:
    Lalyan Brownlock of Nobottle

I think I missed your post last week. I will go back and look now! :)
