Evernight and Stargazer (by Claudia Gray)

by Claudia Gray
Release date : February 2009
Bianca wants to escape. At the eerily Gothic Evernight Academy, the other students are sleek, smart, and almost predatory. Bianca knows she doesn't fit in. When she meets handsome, brooding Lucas, he warns her to be careful—even when it comes to caring about him. But the connection between them can't be denied. Bianca will risk anything to be with Lucas, but dark secrets are fated to tear them apart . . . and to make Bianca question everything she's ever believed. (taken from HarperCollins)
MY THOUGHTS : This book starts like an usual teen diary, telling the story of an average high school girl. So I was really happy and surprised when it turned out that Bianca's life would be far from normal...! I read Evernight when I was starting to work as a reader, therefore wasn't yet used to nor bored with vampire books. That may explain why I was surprised when the vampire twist appeared in the middle of the book. Or maybe it's just really well written and the rest of the story really is unexpected. Either way, I loved this book! I loved the way the story jumped from the usual high school one to the exciting part, which was full of discoveries, explanations ans suspense, while keeping the fresh look on how Bianca evolves as a teenager. I thought it was a thrilling, fluid and clever book. The plot construction was great, and I clung to this story from the beginning to the end. Great characters and occasional laughs were in the menu too. Although I found the end a bit quick, I definitely wanted to discover the sequel!

The vampire in me was closer to the surface . . .
Evernight Academy: an exclusive boarding school for the most beautiful, dangerous students of all—vampires. Bianca, born to two vampires, has always been told her destiny is to become one of them.
But Bianca fell in love with Lucas—a vampire hunter sworn to destroy her kind. They were torn apart when his true identity was revealed, forcing him to flee the school. Although they may be separated, Bianca and Lucas will not give each other up. She will risk anything for the chance to see him again, even if it means coming face-to-face with the vampire hunters of Black Cross—or deceiving the powerful vampires of Evernight. Bianca's secrets will force her to live a life of lies. Yet Bianca isn't the only one keeping secrets. When Evernight is attacked by an evil force that seems to target her, she discovers the truth she thought she knew is only the beginning... (taken from HarperCollins)
MY THOUGHTS : Rather positive, although I found it less convincing than the first volume. I have to admit I was a bit disappointed. The situation is of course more settled, but I felt like there was less suspense and surprises. I sometimes felt like too many things were happening at the same time, and many questions were asked constantly. But I thought the characters gained in every way and I remained curious and commited to the story. I love Claudia Gray's voice and writing, and that didn't change with this book. Despite the influx of information, events and doubts, I clung to the story. A good read, although less exciting than Evernight for my taste.

  1. I think I'll try this series one day. Thank you so much for the review =D

  2. Fun sketch!
I'd be interested to know if you would have liked the first book as much if you'd read it towards the end of the vampire craze. In any case, I'm interested in at least trying out the first book!
